About Us

The village of Chulmleigh lies in the heart of the Devon countryside, roughly midway between Dartmoor to the south and Exmoor to the north. It sits atop a hill some 500 feet (160 metres) above sea level. The cricket ground is situated on the edge of the village in the most peaceful and tranquil surroundings imaginable, with distant views to the aforementioned Dartmoor.

Chulmleigh Cricket Club is a traditional village cricket club. We play no league cricket, but that does not mean the cricket we play is anything other than competitive and hard-fought. A significant proportion of our fixtures are against touring teams, many of whom return year after year. Indeed one team, South Oxfordshire Amateurs, have been visiting us every season since 1947, the year our thatched pavilion opened. The annual SOA fixture, of which one of the highlights is the splendid lunch, is always a keenly contested and most enjoyable occasion.

Our game of cricket

Our selection policy is to give the maximum number of players the opportunity to play, and our teams are invariably a mix of all abilities and ages. We play weekend, mid-week and evening fixtures against teams from near and far, against opposition ranging from the strong to the less strong. Our annual Under 25s vs. Over 25s match is a great social occasion and determines whether the bragging rights for the next twelve months go to either the Golden Oldies or the Young Whippersnappers of the Club.

Competitive and hard-fought cricket

Many of the visiting teams make use of the facilities situated in the village. A popular schedule seems to be a round of golf at Chulmleigh Golf Course, followed by lunch at one of the three pubs in the village before arriving at the cricket ground for the civilised starting time of 2.30pm. After the game both teams adjourn to one of the town's pubs where the finer points of the game and the highlights and lowlights of individual performances can be discussed over a drink or two.

The Club also has plenty of off-field activities. Some, such as the quiz nights and skittles evenings, come under the guise of fund-raising, whilst others such as our trips to Taunton to watch Somerset CCC are purely social.
